Twenty-five artists are exhibiting works inspired by the literary works of the writer TRACY CHEVALIER, citing the relevant text and quotation. As they admire the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the images, themes and characters born of the writer’s skilful pen, as depicted and interpreted through the artists’ own sensibilities.
I conceive of artistic activity as a whole, in which different forms and individual expressions are not separate worlds, but rather different facets of the same creative experience. For this reason, I believe that dialogue between different forms of artistic expression—literature, visual art, and other disciplines—can be especially meaningful and enriching.
Another aspect I would like to encourage and bring greater attention to is what I call “diffused art”: artistic production that grows out of and within local territories, often independently of the major art market and its established circuits. I believe that this kind of work can express something authentic and deeply rooted in a particular place, while at the same time creating unexpected connections with other forms of creativity.
This is, in essence, the spirit I hope to bring to the exhibition: creating a space where different artistic voices can meet, enter into dialogue, and reveal the connections between them.
Your work, and particularly the way you bring together literature, art, history, and place, resonates deeply with this way of thinking. This is also one of the reasons I chose to dedicate the exhibition to your work as a writer. I find your writing especially engaging and pleasurable to read, but also remarkably rich in the way it weaves historical elements into the narrative and brings attention to lesser-known art forms and creative practices. I feel that this sensibility is very close to the spirit I hope to give to the exhibition.
