I am a self-taught artist, born in 1947 in Vietnam and educated in arts during the French lycée with a Baccalauréat in philosophy in 1966. In 1967 I went to USA for university studies ending in 1977 with Ph.D in Economics at University of Pennsylvania/Wharton School in Philadelphia. I live in Rome and work with many forms of visual arts and materials. I do photography and painting, sometimes sculpture and experiments with raku firing techniques. I am passionate about Italian history of art and architecture. I am particularly fascinated by the works of Piero dellaFrancesca for the simplicity of his design that harmonizes rationality and aesthetics, and for his ability to capture a specific moment in time and communicate the emotions through the pictorial silence (not just describe, evoke them): for me his figures in their immobility of a moment and in their pictorial silence are talking, they resonate incredibly with feelings every time you look at them. Caravaggio is also very special in communicating through his paintings but in tones that are much more dramatic, often even provocative. I find intriguing the 'school' of Giorgione, and his student Tiziano, especially for the colors, play of light and scenes full of atmospheric and emotional evocations. I love the very old Romanesque churches that symbolize the early Romanesque art, with rustic but classic structures, and naive decorative designs that tell stories and speak out messages. In practice as an artist I prefer a simple style to express and to communicate emotions and ideas, working in a more modern approach with more spontaneity and freedom, with colors and forms. I am thus inspired by the more contemporary artistic directions especially the schools of Abstract Expressionism, Futurism and Color Field in France, Italy and America. In any case when I paint, I always work with specific themes based on ideas, moods, literature, music and nature. And I am always ready to explore new ways of seeing and creating my art works. My sculptures are mostly modern in terracotta and steel.
I am also a multimedia visual artist, having gained an exciting and successful experience at my family winery in Tuscany. In fact, after some 20-year career as economist at the World Bank in Washington DC, USA, together with my Italian husband (a colleague at the Bank with whom I am married for 44 years) we returned to Italy in 1999 to start up a new small winery in Tuscany. Until 2022 as passionate wine growers we worked with our hands to produce wine in our own vineyard estate in Bolgheri in the Maremma of Tuscany. Our wines are much appreciated by clients and critics and had great success on both national and international markets. During these 22 years of wine life, I was responsible for producing the wine and for doing all the multimedia communications to tell the stories of our wines: creating corporate brand images, designing wine labels that reflect the character of each wine, preparing visual and graphic design for exhibitions and wine fairs, doing video editing, creating all the narrative and visual contents for business communications and promotional campaigns on social media in countries where our wines are exported (USA, Europe, Asia). I published a photography book, Stories of Hands and Wine, with related photos exhibited at fairs and art studios in a number of cities in Europe and in USA.
