I am visual artist based in Tampere, Finland. My artistic work consists of paintings and drawings. I am also a member of two-men artist group ROP, which focuses on sculptures and installations.
My paintings are known for the combination of strong drawing line and fresh colours, making my works quite easily recognizable and characteristic. Lately my imagery has been a mix of concrete and surreal, with real-life elements like cars, scaffoldings and buildings standing firmly amongst abstract colourspaces and expressive brush strokes. There are also human characters around, very small people with big noses, busy with their toilings and unaware of the viewer. There is a definite element of humour in my paintings, because I believe it is one of the most essential assets we humans have today. Closer examination of the paintings reveals more complex themes though. The line between laughter and tears is quite thin, and it is left up to the viewer how to interpret the visual elements.
I have always drawn a lot. For the last couple of years I have been drawing mostly places and buildings. I basically walk wherever, stop when I see something interesting and draw it. Just like it looks at that particular moment. Working this way has been a blast! It is fast, it is challenging and I get to go out of the studio every once a while. It is also interesting how people see these documentary drawings. The interpretation depends whether the viewer recognizes the place or not. If he does, connection is created and the viewer can mirror his own memories from that place. If not, the interpretation is only about the drawing technique. The working method is quite contrary to the way I work with paintings or within ROP, and also that has been refreshing!
Regardless of the medium, I want to make pictures which create inspiration. My pictures are of what I see and think, smell and taste, hear and feel. The opposites make our lives interesting; sense-absurdity, beauty-ugliness, love-hate, stupidity-wisdom; an endless source of material. My ultimate aim as an artist is to uplift, not to depress. And it is not by closing the eyes to the facts of the world. It is by looking at that what we are capable of in our best form. It is by having hope and trying to visualize it.
