To affirm this hypothesis, simply read the title of one of Gershwin's major compositions: Rhapsody in Blue. Is there music in art? To affirm this, simply evaluate the rhythm of artistic compositions. Throughout all art forms—painting, sculpture, and photography—there has always been a narrative rhythm that seems to draw on different musical tones. To give just a few examples, Caravaggio's compositions, with their strong contrasts of light and shadow, convey the sense of instruments with a low-pitched sound, such as the timpani and double bass, while Botticelli's works seem to emit sounds produced by high-pitched, or rather "gentle," instruments such as the oboe, violin, and xylophone.
