Akimjon Zavqibekov (b. 1969) is a Toronto-based visual artist whose practice explores memory, identity, spirituality, and the emotional landscapes of human experience. Born in Khorog, Tajikistan, a mountainous region where natural stillness and movement coexist, he developed an early sensitivity to environment and atmosphere—an influence that continues to shape his work.
He trained at the State Art College, graduating with honors, and began his career as both an artist and educator. From 2000 to 2010, he worked as an illustrator and graphic designer with the Aga Khan Foundation. His contributions to health education initiatives reflected an early commitment to art as a tool for communication, care, and community connection. After relocating to Toronto in 2013, he completed studies in graphic design at Herzing College while continuing to develop his fine arts practice in Canada.
Zavqibekov works across oil, acrylic, and mixed media, moving between realism and abstraction. His work is deeply influenced by Sufi philosophy and Islamic spirituality, which inform his exploration of inner transformation, presence, impermanence, and the relationship between the visible and the unseen. His compositions often depict figures that emerge and dissolve within layered, atmospheric spaces, creating a visual language centered on transition and perception.
His work has been recognized as a finalist in the Diamond Jubilee Fine Arts Competition and awarded Gold at the Illume Festival of Canada (Toronto, 2023). In 2025, he represented Canada in visual arts at Global Encounters in Dubai. In 2026, he presented his solo exhibition *The Space Between* at The Show Gallery in Toronto.
Alongside his studio practice, Zavqibekov leads painting workshops within community settings, fostering spaces for shared exploration and creative reflection.
Through his work, Zavqibekov reflects on memory, cultural continuity, spirituality, and the shifting nature of identity. His paintings are grounded in observation and lived experience, offering spaces where form dissolves into feeling and where presence is continually redefined.
