Biography
Ruggero Lenci is an Italian architect and professor, formerly Professor of Architecture and Architectural Composition at Sapienza University of Rome. His work spans theoretical research, design, and editorial production, with a particular focus on the relationships between architectural languages, formal sciences, and interpretative models of contemporary design. He is the author of the book "Linguistic Codes of Contemporary Architecture" (2025) and director of the editorial series "Sciences of Sustainable Living."
In his book "Evolution and Architecture between Science and Design" (2008), starting from the principle formulated by Ernst Haeckel according to which "ontogenesis recapitulates phylogenesis," he proposes a transposition of the evolutionary model to the architectural field, interpreting the ontogenesis of design as a recapitulation of the historical processes of architecture within an evolutionary perspective of design languages.[1]
On the design front, he created an experimental housing unit in Favaro Veneto (Venice), the result of a prize in the Europan 1 European competition (1989),[2] along with other residential projects developed for Bergamo, Bologna, Florence, and the island of Bo in Sweden, as part of a research project on the typological transformations of contemporary living.
His research has focused significantly on the so-called "Roman School" of architecture, addressed through monographs dedicated to figures, works, and processes of the late twentieth century and the contemporary era, including Studio Passarelli. One Hundred Years, One Hundred Projects (2006), Pietro Barucci architetto (2009), La Casa del Girasole (2012), La Torre Eurosky (2014), and Engineers-architects of the Roman School of Architecture (2021).[3]
Another aspect of his work concerns the theme of housing, developed through studies that intertwine urban analysis, typological transformations, and models derived from complexity sciences, such as in Mutazioni Laurentino 38 (2011),[4] Sustainable Housing. Genetic Mutations in Tor Bella Monaca (2019), The Enigma of the Housing Unit between Theory and Design Research (2020), and The Flaminio Project as a Research Product (2022).
Acknowledgements
Lenci has received awards in architectural competitions. Among his major achievements are the Europan 1 competition (1989), an honorable mention for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt (1989), first prize for the urban transformation of the San Lorenzo area in Rome (2000), and first prize for residential projects for the Carabinieri in Rome (2004). He has also received additional awards and mentions in national and international competitions.
In the artistic field, he was awarded the first prize ex aequo in the "Arte in Luce" competition from the Sapienza Foundation in 2017, 2018, and 2019.[5] In 2023, one of his sculptures was featured on the cover of the Catalogo dell’Arte Moderna (CAM no. 59, Cairo).[6]
Critical Reception and Disciplinary Framework
Lenci's theoretical and design production is part of the contemporary Italian debate on the intersection of architecture, formal science, and design theory, emerging as a field of research in which theoretical and operational dimensions are interdependent. Critical reception has highlighted its systemic nature, interpreting it as an attempt to construct a coherent model for the interpretation and production of contemporary architectural languages.
First, his work has been traced back to Roman architectural culture between the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, in relation to the tradition of the so-called "Roman School" and the problem of the continuity and transformation of typological languages. In this context, contributions by Marcello Fagiolo, Alessandra Muntoni, and Franco Purini[7] place him within a reflection on morphological invariants and their contemporary declinations, with particular attention to the relationship between drawing, design, and construction.
A second line of interpretation concerns the theoretical-methodological dimension, centered on hypotheses of correlation between scientific models and the morphogenetic processes of design. In this context, Mario Pisani[8] and Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi[9] have discussed the systemic structure of his theoretical constructions, highlighting the tension between conceptual formalization and the operational translatability of contemporary design.
A further level of reception has developed through specialized journals and editorial venues, in which his work has been discussed, among others, by Elio Piroddi[10] and Massimo Bilò[11], in relation to the themes of the transformation of living, the relationship between building typology and urban morphology, and the relationship between design and research.
