Born in Milan in 1977, he currently lives and works in Rome.
After an artistic adolescence marked by the need to depict almost exclusively female subjects through oil painting, Fabrizio Bonato — having come to feel the need to move beyond the constraints of conventional figurative models — began searching for a language more congenial to him, one capable of giving voice, form and structure to his expressive and creative needs.
This is a language made up of fragments and contrasts, which allows the artist, through the disintegration of significant forms, to transform energy into matter.
Fabrizio Bonato’s artistic research therefore focuses on matter-based art (Arte Materica), through an abstract and intense visual language in which cement is the absolute protagonist, elevated to that role because it embodies at once the sense of construction and destruction, of solidity and vulnerability, and above all the progression of matter through time — thus fulfilling the artist’s poetics.
Cement, in fact, characterized by a continuous, progressive hardening process even after its application to the canvas, allows the artist to ensure that the work can live on autonomously once detached from him, continuing to transform incessantly.
In his most recent work, the artist has also declined this use of cement through the addition of plastic materials and aluminum, blending them together until they merge into a single entity, in pursuit of the harmony he seeks.
Fabrizio Bonato’s works, often deliberately monochromatic or bichromatic, emerge as forms of therapeutic expression and inner transformation, reflecting the artist’s constant need to move beyond the limits of the ordinary two-dimensional space of classical art, in favor of a new and different visual and figurative subjectivity.
Through layering, contrasts and irregular geometries, Bonato explores the relationship between energy, matter and memory.
His body of work ranges from matter painting to sculpture and artistic design, always maintaining a strong poetic and expressive coherence.
He has exhibited in galleries and institutional venues in Italy and abroad, including Contart Gallery in Rome, Galleria Spazio 57 in Naples, Museo del Presente in Rende, Casa Argentina in Rome, Palazzo del Monte di Pietà in Messina, Biblioteca Angelica in Rome, the Egyptian Cultural Office in Rome, and the Petro Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv. He has also taken part in contemporary art fairs such as Roma Arte in Nuvola 2025, Paratissima Art Fair 2025, and the BOOMing Contemporary Art Show 2025.
In 2025, he was shortlisted among the top 6 finalists for the Cial Special Prize for Sustainability and Art at the Arte Laguna Prize, with the work “Numero 0”; while in 2024 he was a finalist for the Apollo Dionisiaco Prize with the work “Green Pepper”
