Maria Ludovica Pennacchia is an Italian artist who lives and works in Rome. After earning a degree in Architecture from Sapienza University of Rome in 1984, she continued her artistic education, obtaining a Master’s degree in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 2021.
Her artistic research emerges from the encounter between painting, nature and architecture, focusing on the memory of places and the transformation of the landscape.
Greenhouses, gardens, vegetation and architectural structures become suspended spaces in her paintings, sometimes abandoned or imagined, where nature continues to live and reclaim space.
The project “Lost Ecosystems” represents one of the central themes of her research. Through a figurative and visionary approach to painting, the artist explores what remains of a fragile natural world, transformed by human intervention yet capable of resisting.
Her works bring reality and imagination, personal and collective memory, the built environment and the natural world into dialogue. The greenhouse thus becomes a metaphor: a space of protection but also of loss, a place where something that seemed to have disappeared may still begin to grow again.
Pennacchia’s paintings invite the viewer to enter these silent spaces and confront a simple yet contemporary question: what remains when an ecosystem, a landscape or a memory is about to disappear?
Her practice incorporates mixed media and a variety of materials, combining painting and matter to create surfaces and environments with a strong tactile and visionary dimension.But why do I make art?
The answer is simple: because it is the most authentic way I communicate. Through my works I try to give form to what is ineffable, to tell stories that belong not only to me, but also to the viewer. Every brushstroke, every shade of color is a fragment of myself, but also a mirror for the viewer.
My poetics is nourished by contrasts: the dream that mixes with memory, the real that meets the imaginary. I try to create worlds where the viewer can lose himself and find himself again, worlds where emotion is at the center, rather than rational understandingI want to invite the viewer of my works to stop, to reflect, but above all to feel. To remember one's forgotten dreams or emotions left undone. Art, for me, is an open space, where everyone can bring their own meaning.
Ultimately, making art is my way of staying human in an increasingly hectic world. It is my act of resistance against superficiality, my attempt to find beauty even where there seems to be none.
