Coal Alchemy

Exploring Biochar with art

Art and sustainability come together in a single vision, illuminating the path towards a better future.

32 artists invited by curator Velia Littera will create artworks using Biochar coal as the main or integrated material. Two masters have joined the exhibition project: Michelangelo Pistoletto, with a Third Paradise made entirely of Biochar, and Norio Nagayama, who will present  for the occasion an artwork related to the ancient art of Shodo calligraphy,

Each piece tells a unique story, combining aesthetics with an ecological message, inviting the public to reflect on our relationship with nature and the need to adopt more sustainable practices.

Sculptures, paintings, ceramics, photographs, and site-specific installations will become symbols of the deep connection between humans and their environment.

Artists have found Biochar to be a fascinating material for their works due to its unique materiality and distinctive properties. Biochar, a type of charcoal obtained through the pyrolysis of biomass, is not only environmentally sustainable but also offers visual and tactile characteristics that make it attractive for artistic expression.

With hands immersed in vegetable charcoal or imagining it in a virtual environment, the artists have shaped, molded, and created new forms of art, bringing their visions to life. It will be an engaging and sensory experience, transforming the viewer from a mere observer to an active participant, as there will also be opportunities to touch, smell, and experience it.

The artworks created with Biochar leave an indelible mark on the minds and hearts, inspiring us to be responsible stewards of the planet we call home.

"Alchemy of Coal" is not just an art exhibition but an exciting journey through art and nature, an invitation to rediscover the magic of the world around us and to commit to preserving it for future generations.
