Marco Balbi Dipalma

He trained at DAMS in Bologna, followed by a collaboration in R. Mirecka's paratheatre from J. Grotowski's Teatr Laboratorium. His research investigates the plasticity of the body, recording it in such a way as to reveal the presence of the soul.

BIO

I'm a perfomer and video artist. I graduated in theatre studies at the Department of Art, Music and Performing Arts of the University of Bologna. In 2018, completed the advanced training course in socio-cultural educator at the Department of Educational Sciences of the University of Bologna. From 2001 to 2017, studied and collaborated with Maestro Dimitri Pasquali, from whom I learnt the fundamental techniques of classical theatre, cinema, voice and theatre didactics. I am a self-taught photographer and video editor. In 2004, I met Rena Mirecka. Rena Mirecka was one of the founding members and first actress of J. Grotowski’ s Teatr Laboratorium. Since 2004, I have continued to participate in the Master's Paratheatrical laboratory, becoming her assistant and finally the leader of "The Sun - The school of Rena Mirecka". I led "The Sun" from 2017 to 2022, with the support of the Grotowski Institute (Wroclaw- PL). I collaborated with Rena Mirecka for 18 years. In 2021 I have been started a new research in the field of ritual performance arts. Since 2022 I continue this research and share performative pedagogy as an independent artist. In 2022 I have been started a new video art research. In my research as a video artist, I question the self in an existential sense, starting with the plasticity of the body. Red is the colour I contemplate. The eternal Pathos of red. My videos are carnal prayers that investigate Being.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

In my research as a performer and video artist, I seek the co-adaptation of traditional ritual technique with the creativity of performance: ritual performance art. I question ‘Being’ and ‘I’ and their existential relationship, through the plasticity of the body. Red is the colour I contemplate. The eternal Pathos of red. The form of the body, born of inner pulsations, colours the space with emotional tones, becoming open form. The body is a language of slits, revealing in silence. The ambivalent being of presence and absence. My videos are carnal prayers. The camera has the peculiarity of recording the body, revealing the luminous presence of the soul and a lived space. I use the technique of reverso time, freeze, loop, sequence, feedback loop, datamoshing, fading, to study the becoming of forms and feelings over time. The videos, based on autobiographical experiences, investigate the verticality of the human being and catharsis: they thematise pain as a source of relational and spiritual transformative knowledge. The primary love of the performer is at the centre of my investigation.
