Toby Mott’s solo exhibition marks the artist’s return to Rome after almost thirty years. Through text-based works, images, and archival materials, including elements drawn from his more personal sphere, Mott continues to explore the relationship between language, counterculture, and urban identity, maintaining the radical attitude that has characterised his practice from the 1980s to the present day.
The publication accompanying the exhibition brings together examples of Mott’s work developed over several decades, tracing a practice in which art, graphic design, publishing, and archival research are inextricably intertwined.

For the exhibition, a limited-edition zine and a numbered and signed silkscreen print will also be available, conceived to mark his return to the capital.

Toby Mott (London, 1964) is a British artist, designer, and collector whose work spans contemporary art, punk culture, graphic design, and archival practices. Co-founder of the Grey Organisation, a post-punk collective active in 1980s London across art, political action, and visual communication, he helped redefine the relationship between artistic practice, activism, and counterculture through radical actions and experimental interventions. After moving to the United States in the late 1980s, he collaborated with some of the leading figures of the international music scene, including De La Soul, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Rolling Stones, creating artwork, graphic projects, and video installations. He is the author of the celebrated cover of the album 3 Feet High and Rising, now part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His work has been exhibited at international institutions and spaces including MoMA PS1, White Columns, Saatchi Gallery, and MUSAC.
Alongside his artistic practice, Mott has built the Mott Collection over the years, one of the most important independent archives dedicated to punk aesthetics and British underground cultures.

The exhibition is open from 3 October 2026 at PrimaLinea Studio, Via Giovan Battista Gandino 31, Rome, and will remain open until 5 November 2026.

The exhibition and Limited Edition Zine are curated by Stefano Lemon and Guido Gazzilli, Rome-based photographers and curators whose work investigates subcultures through photography. Their practice is characterised by an anthropological exploration of urban identity and marginal communities, and has been published in i-D, Vogue Italia, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, and Vogue, and exhibited at international festivals and museums.

PrimaLinea Studio is an independent creative hub based in Rome. It develops projects in contemporary art, urban regeneration, and cultural innovation through a multidisciplinary approach.
