Alessandro Panzetti Open Studio

Nine “anamorphic installations” on display—nine stages of an inquiry, a reflection on the ambiguity of the sign in its broadest sense, and the consequent difficulty of interpreting it.

My work—expressed in this exhibition through nine anamorphotic installations—explores the duality of the mark and its inherent ambiguity. Each of my installations offers a dual mode of engagement: they can be experienced freely, like any three-dimensional installation, yet they all incorporate a specific "visual viewing condition." This condition—often in surprising ways—allows the viewer to grasp the work’s compositional logic, such as its form and the spatial relationships between its elements. While the specific viewing conditions vary across the nine installations, they all stem from the application of perception-altering scientific principles: for instance, using projective geometry to establish a privileged vantage point; employing binocular vision and color complementarity to render flat shapes three-dimensional; or utilizing retinal persistence to animate static objects. Through these installations, I aim to deceive and disorient the viewer—much like the Renaissance anamorphoses or the phantasmagoria machines of the 18th and 19th centuries, which serve as my direct inspiration. However, while those historical devices sought solely to astonish and amaze—thereby focusing interest on the object depicted *by* the machine—I invert this functional hierarchy. Here, the choice of subject matter serves merely to facilitate the machine's compositional structure; the machine itself becomes the object on display—the artwork, the installation.
