Music, first and foremost,              Rome Art Week 2025                 Michel Patrin

“Music, first and foremost,”

The first line of Paul Verlaine's poem “Poetic Art” has been with me since childhood. And it's almost always while listening to classical music that my works are born; rhythm and melody intertwine with shapes and colors, almost unconsciously permeating shapes and colors.

“Because we still want nuance,                 not color, but only nuance!”

In this edition of Rome Art Week, I tried to explore music's ability to influence and interpenetrate painting. It's an attempt to unite and blend two arts, painting and music: two independent arts that merge.

“Music, again and again!                       May your verse be the thing that goes away,                                                          that can be heard fleeing from a soul on its way                                                              to other skies and other loves.”

Paintings that produce music, painted vinyl records, colorful musical scores, melodies translated onto canvas: my painted symphony.
