“Migrations and Metamorphoses” Photos by Valter Sambucini

A work on “transparencies, vibrations, and overlaps of identity,” beyond the hypnotic charm of the media, for a symbolic visual language that enhances the transformative power of art.

Katriona Munthe's Caverna di Platone, which hosts this exhibition, is a unique space where multimedia innovation integrates with the sciences of symbols, arts, and archetypal expressions of humanity, in relation to the profound workings of the psyche.
Valter Sambucini's photographic works focus on the signs of an accelerated and frenetic movement of human beings, in a world where certainties seem to have become uncertain and where generalized violence has returned, to the detriment of dialogue and debate aimed at mutual understanding. The artist, who has a degree in electronic engineering, has been painting with digital photography since the 1990s, but this does not mean he has abandoned the realism of his shots, on which he intervenes creatively, avoiding the pitfalls of the metaphysical boundary between the real and the virtual. In this sense, he adheres to the term ‘surmodernity’ (quoting Marc Augè), describing a humanity immersed in the problems of ‘triple acceleration or excess’. The excess and acceleration of time, the excess and expansion of space, and finally the excess of ego, a hypertrophy of the self through which the individual tends to protect themselves in self-referential ways.

Even the refractions in the water reveal a mirroring of the boundary between the human and the virtual, highlighting the frenzy of the masses and the loneliness of individuals. James Hillman (an original student of Carl Gustav Jung), confirming that the psyche is made up of images, argues that through these images we can find the possibility of healing ourselves.
