The seven deadly vices

Alex Caminiti's works carved in marble symbolize the overcoming of outdated values. Contemporary art reflects on the need for human authenticity by contrasting new forms of sin such as cruelty, fanaticism and dishonesty.

Pride, Envy, Avarice, Wrath, Gluttony, Lust and Sloth are the seven deadly vices engraved and carved in marble that international artist Alex Caminiti brings to Rome at KOU Gallery on the occasion of RAW 2024.

One of the most significant exponents of contemporary Sicilian art, Alex Caminiti (born in Messina in 1977), through paintings, sculptures, performances and videos, investigates man's need to find himself in his uniqueness and complexity, embracing every aspect of his being in order to arrive at fully experiencing his own authenticity. Alex is a complete artist, driven by the desire to communicate and make people reflect on experiences and emotions of our present. Different languages and means of expression are used by Caminiti to focus attention on universal themes and values that define our identity.

The seven deadly vices can be paralleled with the seven virtues to which they are opposed: the three Theological Virtues (Faith, Hope and Charity) and the four Cardinal Virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance). However, Alex's seven sins are engraved in the marble because the artist warns us that they are dead and buried. According to recent surveys, they are no longer relevant and in first place today are cruelty, bigotry, dishonesty, hypocrisy, avarice, adultery and selfishness.
