Giulio De Martino and Edoardo Ferrini, co-authors of the book "The Disturbed Spectator: Forms of Happiness and Panic in the Dystopian Society."
Contemporary dystopias, both social and artistic, confront us with collective fears: the dread of pandemic contagion, the phobia of nuclear energy, and the anxiety over the fate of the planet, all express the disorientation of the Western world. The "disturbed spectator" receives a continuous flow of sensory gratifications and invitations to pleasure from screens, making even catastrophes feel familiar.
