Andrea Fumagalli’s work tells the story of a multifaceted identity that stems from a visceral attachment to every context experienced, while simultaneously being inextricably stateless.

Andrea Fumagalli’s work tells the story of a multifaceted identity that stems from a visceral attachment to every context experienced, while simultaneously being inextricably stateless.

He had a Roman childhood and undertook an artistic and craft apprenticeship in Paris, after which he led a nomadic adulthood exploring the expressive potential of Western aesthetics. This exploration coexists with the essential dynamism of metropolitan life, distilled from his experiences in Milan, New York, and San Francisco, and is evident in his work with traditional Italian forms such as tapestry and ceramics.

The works on display are the result of this synthesis of his personal and professional life. In them, the artist expresses his emotional impressions of both his homeland and his adopted home with equal intensity. The multiplicity of places and experiences is transfigured into identity in the artwork.

The artwork arises from the performative expertise of the artisan-artist, who combines the malleability of the material — be it fabric, ceramics, or the densest color — with the surreal quality of impossible landscapes. This coexistence of sensations and images is an expression of a journey through the myriad places of a single, vivid, kaleidoscopic space.
