ECCE TERA
Annalinda Maso
Et cetera: “and everything else,” “and the remaining things.” From the etymology of the word “etcetera,” the artist draws the meaning that gives the exhibition its title: ECCE TERA, a meeting between ecce — “behold,” the gesture that points out, reveals, and calls into presence — and tera, the prefix that measures the immense (10¹²), a symbolic scale for that which eludes calculation. It is from this threshold that Annalinda Maso’s work takes shape: making visible what, by its very nature, exceeds every measure.
The choice of the Lavatoio Contumaciale reveals a profound connection with the work. Originally conceived as a place of quarantine, respite, and care, the space historically suspended ordinary time in order to preserve life. Within this context, the presence of the sundial becomes a poetic device: removed from the cycle of the sun and artificially illuminated, it reveals an engraved shadow, fixed and motionless.
A visual short circuit is thus generated: the sundial no longer measures astronomical time as it passes, but instead reveals (ecce) the time that remains, transforming the immense (tera) into a tangible trace. The engraved shadow suspends measurement, becoming a sculpture of presence and a memory of the place.
It is in this encounter between movement and stillness that Annalinda Maso’s poetics finds expression, rooted in the recovery of objects of memory, the rediscovery of primordial gestures, and rituals connected to the feminine and to the sacred dimensions of everyday life. The artist’s work thus becomes a living trace, a sediment of time even before it becomes a mere representation.
