GIANMARIA DE LUCA
Gianmaria De Luca is an artist working with photography and printmaking. He uses darkness to create with light. After getting to know his subjects, he waits for the evening to photograph them. Leaving his camera shutter open for tens of seconds in total darkness, he uses a torch to paint light onto his subjects.
His more recent projects have involved the construction of a large-scale camera obscura, one of the earliest photography techniques that similarly functions best in darkness. These methods play with contrast and invert normality to create surreal characters and dreamlike worlds, a signature of his work.
Born in Rome in 1988, Gianmaria combines classic Italian artistic tradition with inspiration drawn from different cultures experienced throughout his travels. His work to date includes fine art and reportage photography, experimental installations and work with notable artists and masters of costume and set design, journalism, and filmmaking as well as commissioned work for clients that include Fortuny, Concrete Playground, The Secret Garden Festival, Laneway Festival and Pietro Ruffo. He has exhibited globally throughout Italy, Northern Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Australia.
