"Anna Maria Tanzi reveals herself sparingly, allowing herself mostly long periods of meditation and execution. Her works take shape from the observation of reality, from the recognition of a fact, from someone’s words. Behind her process lies an intuition. The subject must be deeply felt, the choice of expressive means carefully considered, the technique tested and made her own, never repetitive. This explains the long time frames. The ethereal forms of the watercolors, the human figure always mediated, as if to suggest the difficulty of truly understanding. Abstraction, made of objects arranged in space according to rigorous but hard-to-read schemes. Phrases with strong meanings that become cryptic through the simple rearrangement of letters. Embroidery, and everything that is part of it, becomes an image of itself and/or a representation of the essence of femininity... Can we say she follows different lines of research? In a certain sense, yes. But there is a very strong connection between seemingly distant works: it is the clear attempt to transform vision (which pertains to sight) into observation (which pertains to intellect), in order to engage the viewer in her reflections."
