MEANING AND CONTENT OF HER ARTISTIC WORK
The absolute protagonist of her work is the “thread,” a fragile and seemingly insignificant element. Through a dense network of weaves and warps, the thread can break, fray, stretch, and overlap to express a variety of emotions and moods, as well as powerful and disruptive messages. This is how works such as Mediterranean (2018), representing the despair of many refugees at sea; Burqa (2009), on the difficult and complex condition of women; Center of Gravity (2018), or Cosmic Explosion (2008), came to life.
The central theme of her most recent artistic period draws inspiration from the “shadows and lights” of small fragments of reality, often overlooked but which, in her eyes, appear as delicate lace, embroideries where golden leaves rest alongside cigarette butts, scraps of paper and plastic—evidence of a hurried and careless humanity.
Art historian and professor Stefano Borsi wrote about her in the review of her solo exhibition Trame (2009):
“…Maria Pia’s art is as delicate as her weaves, not shouted and not inclined to commercial concessions—intimate and vibratile, dreamy yet attentive, at times even ethically and socially engaged. Even classical in her uncompromising defense of a 'craft' that carries the scent of good academic tradition and long apprenticeship, of honesty in line and mastery in technique…”
