Her painting originates in matter: on canvas, Gisella Candido constructs high-relief surfaces in which plaster, impasto, felt and gold leaf are layered, incised and fractured, evoking a geological landscape of crusts, fissures and sediments. In some works, faces and presences surface from the matter, while gold settles into the cracks like a lingering light.
In dialogue with the tradition of European Art Informel, her work investigates the relationship between surface and depth, between what settles and what resurfaces.
In some works she introduces thermochromic and photochromic pigments: the surface changes with heat and under ultraviolet light, and the viewer becomes part of its transformation. The cycle Trauma · Scarring · Healing (2024–2026) explores the wound and its memory.
In 2026 she is among the artists selected for The Golden Ratio Art Exhibition II, curated by Eileen Contreras at Palazzo Ruspoli, Rome, as part of Rome Art Week.
She lives and works in Calabria, Italy. A graduate in Economics from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and in Law, she pursues her painting practice alongside a professional career in the financial sector.
