Juna Cappilli was born in Lecce in 1983 into an artistic family. She works with photography and digital art and currently lives and works in Rome. She spent her youth and formative years in Bologna, collaborating with major university museums and contemporary art institutions, including MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome and the Museo di Palazzo Poggi – Institute of Sciences and Arts in Bologna.
She has been featured in numerous art venues, including MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, Paratissima in Turin, Palazzo Merulana – Fondazione Elena e Claudio Cerasi in Rome, Fondazione Franco Zeffirelli in Florence, Fondazione Amedeo Modigliani, Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan, Palazzo Falconieri – Hungarian Academy in Rome, Mattatoio – Centre for Art Research and Development, and the Padua Modern and Contemporary Art Fair.
After moving to Rome, her research and study of contemporary art increasingly focused on intimate and introspective themes. The emotional language of the image becomes a tool for “healing”, while photography serves as an artistic and communicative medium. By emphasizing digital layering as an essential feature of contemporary representation, she reintroduces material complexity, overlaying the inherently flat surfaces of digital compositions with textures, grain and deliberate imperfections, creating a productive short circuit between the consistency of colour and the unexpected elements constructed ad hoc, in a fusion of material and digital experimentation. In her photography there is an extremely subtle reality, made of light and shadow and material oxidations, all striving towards a constant search for balance. Her artistic research has a profound connection with the works she creates and is not limited to social commentary; her work always arises from a deep need for understanding that comes from afar and represents an extension of the physical, spiritual and mental self.
