The idea of a democratic, participatory art shapes all his work, ranging from environmental installations to murals, multimedia interactivity, performance, and photography, as seen in the projects at MACRO and Porta Furba.
Data and contact details
Ugo Spagnuolo was born in Rome in 1964. After attending the Liceo Artistico, he graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. For over twenty years, he has lived in the countryside of northern Rome, alternating his artistic work with teaching Graphic and Pictorial Disciplines in public schools.
Since his early days, he has focused on audience interaction and engagement, using interactive mechanical and electronic devices since the early 1990s. In 1996, he founded the group Radice di tre, which experienced a temporary rotation of collaborators. The constant figures were Spagnuolo and Marianelli, who managed most of the projects on their own from 2009 until 2015 (the year Spagnuolo decided to continue independently).
His poetics take shape through a variety of methods, ranging from environmental installations to murals, multimedia interactivity, and performance art. The concept of a democratic and participatory art connects all of his work—both collective and individual—and serves as the defining feature of his different creative approaches.
