Francesca Mancini @ Rome Art Week
Francesca Mancini
Born and raised in Rome, amidst the sacred aura of "cuppolone" and the profane bustle of the historic center, I'm driven by a mixed heritage of Roman, Abruzzese, Sicilian, and Norman blood; this compels me to touch what I see and to observe what touches me

"Don't come pestering me too

with those foolish quests

in search of the divine.

God will arrive at dawn

if I am in your arms."

So wrote the immense Alda Merini, and I found the divine the moment I first touched clay—earth making love to water, playing with the wind, and transforming through fire. What is simultaneously more sacred and profane than hands and elements that make the invisible visible?

As a true-blue Roman who has always breathed in the atmosphere of the historic center, I attended a historic Roman school: the City of Rome’s School of Arts and Crafts. I moved from goldsmithing to sculptural modeling. I completed the basic, advanced, and master-level courses at the Ornamental Arts campus on Via di San Giacomo.

I came to sculpture by chance—though, as we know, chance does not exist—following my training as a goldsmith, amidst workbenches, wax, and precious stones.

The duality within me possesses eyes filled with beauty, soft hips, and skillful hands; indomitable and proud Rome—my Eternal City—is the garment I wear. Bagheria, with its scent of orange blossoms and sesame and its magnificent villas, is the heart beating in my chest; Guttuso knows exactly what I mean.
