Alice Ruggieri lives and works in Teramo as a graphic designer. Born in 1980, she has felt a visceral need to leave her mark since childhood, covering the walls of her room with imprints and sketches, as if color had already been the natural language of her inner world.
Her passion for the visual arts stems from an urgent need for expression, an act of liberation and catharsis. During her academic years in L’Aquila, her exploration of gesture and mark-making led her to an experimental practice spanning printmaking, painting, and materiality, where the artistic process becomes a physical and deeply personal experience.
When she creates, she needs to get her hands and face dirty; she needs to work directly on her paintings to make them her own, imprinting herself and her inner world onto them.
Arthur Schopenhauer regarded art as a means of alleviating existential suffering. The philosopher viewed artistic works as a temporary respite from pain, allowing individuals to momentarily forget their own suffering. This perspective perfectly reflects her experience.
She writes: “Art has saved me from my demons, from despair: it is my peace.”
