BIOGRAPHY
Claudia Peill (Genova, settembre 1963) is an Italian contemporary art artist who lives and works in Rome. Right from the start, Claudia Peill’s research focused on the relationship between painting and photography, and the successful and incisive combination of these two very different artistic languages has become a central characteristic of her work. Over time, she began to experiment with different materials, creating a dialectical relationship between abstraction and figuration. Her works were made with paraffin and wax to begin with during the ’90s, and then synthetic resins – until 2010, when she began working with acrylic paint applied directly onto linen canvas, and with photographic images (always her starting point) which undergo a second “transposition”, again onto a particular kind of canvas. The supports may have changed, but the dialogue between the mediums of painting and photography is confirmed and reinforced in her pairing of figurative and nonfigurative elements.
Since 1993 she has exhibited regularly in private galleries, museums and other public spaces in Italy and internationally, including: Künstverein, Steyr, 1999; Galerie Brüning Düsseldorf, 2001; Künstlerhaus, Vienna 2001; Water Toren, Vlissingen, 2001; Italian Cultural Institute, London and Cologne 2003; Künsthalle, Düsseldorf 2005; Galerie Rossella Junk, Berlin, 2008; Gallen-Kallela Museum, Helsinki, 2018; Schloss Wiespach, Salzbürg, 2018; and Great Beauty Contemporary Art Museum, Beijing, 2019. Her most recent Italian exhibitions include Astratte.
