Data and contact details

Istituto Svizzero is a cultural and scientific institution that promotes dialogue between art, research, and society, fostering the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and creative practices between Switzerland and Italy. Active since 1947, it has established itself as an international point of reference for artistic experimentation, interdisciplinary research, and the development of new generations of artists and scholars.

With locations in Rome, Milan, and Palermo, the Institute operates as a transdisciplinary platform where visual arts, performing arts, literature, architecture, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences converge, opening up new perspectives for research and collaboration.

Its Rome headquarters is located in the prestigious Villa Maraini, at Via Ludovisi 48, an eclectic building constructed in 1905 by the Ticino-born entrepreneur Emilio Maraini. Situated on an artificial hill in the heart of the capital, just a short distance from Villa Borghese and Piazza di Spagna, the villa offers extraordinary panoramic views of the city. In 1947, Carolina Maraini-Sommaruga donated the property to the Swiss Confederation, ensuring that it would continue to serve as a place of hospitality, study, and exchange for artists and researchers.

Today, Villa Maraini is home to a vibrant center for cultural production, bringing together residency programs for young artists and researchers, research projects, exhibitions, conferences, concerts, performances, workshops, and public events.

Particular attention is devoted to promoting contemporary and experimental artistic practices through a program that encourages the crossing of disciplinary boundaries and dialogue between different forms of expression. The Institute supports the professional development of emerging artists, fostering international networks and new opportunities for collaboration.

Its activities are distinguished by their ability to connect scientific research with artistic production, creating opportunities for dialogue across disciplines, generations, and cultural contexts.

Through its programming and residency activities, Istituto Svizzero contributes to enriching Italy’s cultural landscape, strengthening Rome’s role as a privileged meeting place for international exchange and experimentation.

Its mission is to envision new forms of knowledge and creativity, promoting an open, dynamic culture capable of critically engaging with the present.
