AAIE is proud to present a retrospective of the work of Gianpaolo Berto, one of the most talented and interesting Italian painters and printmakers of the post-war period. The exhibition, entitled "Painting for Painting: Gianpaolo Berto Private", will be held from April 7 to May 31, 2023 and will feature a selection of paintings, collages, personal photographs, and some tools used by the artist.

Born and raised in Adria in 1940, where a new cultural climate was forming around the figures of Cibotto, Scarpari, Reali, Rizzi, Palmieri, and Gioli. Later in Rovigo, he painted with Prudenziato and Breseghello and became friends with Gabbris Ferrari. The dazzling encounter with the masters Tono Zancanaro and Carlo Levi could be seen as the launching pad of this eclectic artist into the world of contemporary Italian painting. Despite having been among the very few admitted to the studio of De Chirico (but also to those of Guttuso and Picasso) and having exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums, Berto preferred contact, in an anti-elitist key, with a more genuine audience: students, ordinary people, artists, and intellectuals who conduct their own research rigorously, while being independent from the trends. For more than 40 years, Berto taught Engraving Techniques at the Fine Arts Academies of Macerata and Rome.

The exhibition will present a series of portraits of the family, still lifes, naturalistic landscapes as well as his particular views of Venice. Visitors will be able to admire Berto's characteristic use of color, light, and shadow to create depth and texture in his works, as well as his great attention to the detail and the emotions conveyed by his subjects.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share Gianpaolo Berto's art with the world," said Yongxu Wang, director of AAIE. "Berto was a truly unique talent who left a permanent mark on the Italian art scene, and we hope this exhibition will contribute to make his work better known to a wider audience."

The exhibition will also feature some objects from Berto's studio, offering the viewers a glimpse into the artist's personal life and creative process. In addition, a selection of photographs will be exhibited, including images of the artist at work, his family, and his friends.

"Painting for Painting: Gianpaolo Berto Private" promises to be an evocative and enlightening exhibition for art lovers.
