Memory Rises
For Rome Art Week 2026, Phzero presents in the 1m³ Gallery a new interpretation of HVC TIBER ASCENDIT this is how high the Tiber rose an inscription associated with the historic flood markers that record the river’s past overflows.
The work draws on a Roman folk memory: before major floods, rats would leave sewers, cellars and riverbanks and move towards the city, anticipating the coming disaster.
From this story emerges a sentinel of the Tiber: a rebellious, protective pirate, emblem of an imaginary river crew. Able to sense change before humans, it becomes a symbol of warning, memory and resistance: memory rises.
The work invites us to recognise the signs before they become an emergency, connecting memory, environmental change and contemporary responsibility.
During the exhibition, the artist duo Phzero will present the techniques, materials and process behind the work.
