Lavallén appartiene alla grande tradizione dei ritrattisti che pongono la verità interiore del corpo e dello spirito al centro della loro arte e che rimangono fedeli alla loro forma comunicativa. Le sue tele possono far venire in mente certi Capricci di Goya, ma senza il gusto romantico del magico/demoniaco che ispirava quelle fantasie. Oppure possono far pensare ad uno stile che ritroviamo nell’Espressionismo, soprattutto tedesco, ma senza quell’intento di polemica diretta contro la società del tempo che lo animava. I suoi dipinti trasmettono solitudine, tristezza, angoscia, ma emerge anche una sorta di gioia inventiva nella deformazione espressionistica della realtà. A trent’anni dalla prima mostra che la galleria organizzò per il pittore argentino, si espongono una selezione di opere per riscoprire una grande mano, con la sua capacità tecnica di trasferire fluidamente in immagini le sue fantasie.
