CAMERA OBSCURA: GUM BICHROMATE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS

Massimiliano Kornmuller Open Studio

Much like in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the images captured in these photographic prints aim to enlighten prisoners of everyday life by revealing an ideal world of beauty—"untouched by time" (Dante Alighieri, I, Canto III, line 29). The camera obscura used to create these images thus serves as a modern-day Plato’s Cave—as described in Book VII° of The Republic —with the distinction that, in this instance, the reproduced images are those that illuminate the soul.
