Saturday in Blue: Cyanotype as an Artistic Language

L’artista Juliette Wayenberg introduce la tecnica della cianotipia attraverso il suo progetto Grete (Wykofer), indagando le connessioni tra processo fotografico, stratificazione temporale e poetica dell’immagine.

Grete (Wykofer) Solo exhibition by Juliette Wayenberg
Curated by Bianca Ceriani

Extended until 25 November 2025

In Grete (Wykofer), Juliette Wayenberg gives shape to an intimate visual narrative drawn from her family’s photographic archive. The artist selects, reframes, and reworks old negatives, which she then prints using cyanotype—an ancient, alchemical technique that reveals images in deep blues and delicate tonal variations.

Through this process, Wayenberg reconstructs connections, reactivates memories, and brings to light fragments of personal and collective histories. Most of the images originate from vintage photographs of her ancestors, and through enlargement and reprinting they acquire a unified visual language, where intense blue becomes both poetic and symbolic.

As curator Bianca Ceriani writes:
“There is an invisible thread that runs through time, linking the past to the present. It is the thread of family genealogies, of memory that endures, and of History that resurfaces.”

In this project, photography is not merely a document: it is an active witness, a narrative tool, a material to be shaped. Juliette Wayenberg’s work consciously weaves together traditional photographic processes and contemporary sensibilities. Cyanotype becomes a metaphor for the cycles of life: birth and death, loss and rebirth, transformation. Through light and water, the images emerge as suspended visions, charged with memory and ethical tension.
