For the third time, Studio Pansini is opening

its doors to mark Rome Art Week.

This year, Giorgio Casari and Bruno Kuhlmann

are presenting works on canvas and paper that draw

inspiration from the world of birds, using them

as vehicles and tools for formal, poetic and thematic exploration.

The title “FREE AS A BIRD” echoes the title of

a particular Beatles song, capable of

evoking various associations around this image:

escape, speed, danger and failure,

but also transcendence, ecstasy and freedom…

Ideally orbiting around these themes, the

two artists bring together two distinct

and deeply personal visual universes, which take shape

in the works on display.

The subjects of Giorgio Casari’s paintings are

crows, swallows and seagulls soaring through

a sky that is blue, azure or ablaze with the colours

of sunset. The broad brushstrokes of the background

create a contrast with the silhouettes of the birds,

which are rendered not as a description, but as a perception

of movement, captured in the intensity

of a single moment, stretching out its wings as if

eager to plunge into further dimensions, as yet

invisible.

Bruno Kuhlmann evokes a story with which

many have grown up: Wile E. Coyote’s

impossible chase of his elusive prey, the Roadrunner

Beep Beep. In the artist’s abstract works,

whether on paper or canvas, this tragicomic tale of

perpetual failure is transformed into a formal

element.

Just as happens when one fails to realise

one’s plans, the cartoon characters

are fragmented and reworked into ornamental lines,

graphic patterns and abstract marks. In

this transition, Kuhlmann shifts his gaze

from the sky to the earth: the bird can only

run, but it is precisely this ability that makes him

free nonetheless, whilst failure remains

the lot of those who, by every means, try in vain

to capture him. Paradoxically, however, even Beep

Beep remains caged by the sadistic amusement

(Schadenfreude) of the television viewer who

relentlessly forces him into his exhausting

role.

STUDIO PANSINI is a furnished flat

that once belonged to the mother

of the artist Bruno Kuhlmann. For this exhibition,

the decision was made to create a display that

contrasts with the traditional presentation of

a painting hung on the wall, by devising

an internal structure of panels with the aim of

opening up new perspectives and viewpoints for the visitor

and fostering a more dynamic dialogue between the works

of the two artists themselves.
