Stefano Bufalini (Roma, 1983) vive e lavora a Roma. Si diploma in Pittura presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma con una tesi sul pittore Alberto Sughi. Successivamente si laurea in Storia dell’Arte Contemporanea all’Università La Sapienza di Roma presentando una tesi sul pittore belga Luc Tuymans. La sua ricerca artistica è incentrata sulla rimediazione grafica e pittorica di immagini preesistenti. Utilizza immagini provenienti da diversi media: fotogrammi di video tratti dal web e dalla tv. Attraverso il processo di decontestualizzazione e trasposizione in disegno e pittura i codici dei medium si mescolano, creando un insieme complesso e contradditorio di segni che apre l’immagine a nuovi potenziali significati e molteplici interpretazioni. La sua ricerca si pone in tal modo come una riflessione sul carattere mediato della visione contemporanea e sui processi di risemantizzazione delle immagini nei mass media. Attraverso il suo lavoro mette in discussione la pretesa di veridicità delle immagini, che vengono considerate non come semplici rappresentazioni e testimonianze fedeli del reale ma come costruzioni complesse, reinvenzioni della realtà.

Stefano Bufalini (Rome, 1983) lives and works in Rome. He graduated in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome with a thesis on the painter Alberto Sughi. He subsequently graduated in History of Contemporary Art at La Sapienza University of Rome, presenting a thesis on the Belgian painter Luc Tuymans. His artistic research is focused on the graphic and pictorial remediation of pre-existing images. He uses images from different media: video frames taken from the web and TV. Through the process of decontextualization and transposition into drawing and painting, the codes of the mediums mix, creating a complex and contradictory set of signs that opens the image to new potential meanings and multiple interpretations. His research thus presents itself as a reflection on the mediated character of contemporary vision and on the processes of re-semantisation of images in the mass media. Through his work he questions the claim to truthfulness of images, which are considered not as simple representations and faithful testimonies of reality but as complex constructions, reinventions of reality.
