Maya Florence Brittain

Data and contact details

Maya Florence Brittain-Sakuma is a multi media visual artist. She is of Japanese and
American parentage but was born and raised in Rome Italy where she has now returned
to after having lived in Japan and the USA. In her youth she was surrounded by an
artistically inclined family. Her father was a writer, producer and film director while her
mother was an art historian specialised in the history of Rome. Her inherited passion for
the arts lead her to study music at the Rome conservatory, traditional japanese dance
and shodo (the art of calligraphy) in Fukushima, Japan, and to earn a degree in
Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology of Chicago. Her international
background and early diversified education gave her the possibility to live multiple
cultures in her youth that are now profoundly embedded in her. As a citizen of the world
she is fascinated by her personal search for identity and the oblique precarious manner
in which she views existence. Her work allows her to communicate, acknowledge and
document the emotional side of this journey.
She is an existential artist.
