I came to Rome from the United States in the early 1970s to study the Italian method of bronze casting and through friends of friends and chance encounters I was introduced to the art medal. It didn't take me long to realize that a combination of visual, intellectual and literary elements made this so-called minor art unique as a means of expression. In order to learn the specific aesthetical and technical aspects involved in designing and executing models for medals and small low-relief work in general, I spent four years at a specialized school at the Italian Mint. Afterwards I worked freelance for both international organizations and private clients. I still work on commission but since the mid 1990s I have been increasingly involved in using what I learned at the mint to create a more personal style by combining traditional techniques, unusual materials and contemporary visual concepts. I currently reside in Rome, Italy where I alternate between the late 19th and the early 21st centuries according to my mood and the work at hand.
