Katarzyna Bak was born in Poland; she studied lithography, drawing, painting, sculpture and photography at the Faculty of Art Education in Czestochowa, Poland, specialising in lithography. After graduating, she moved to Italy, where she works as an artist and art designer. Since 1996 she has exhibited her works in various solo and group exhibitions in Poland, Belgium, England, Ukraine, Germany and Italy.
In her artistic production, which is heterogeneous in terms of the materials, techniques used and themes analysed, a distinctive stylistic trait can always be traced: in her figurative works as in her more conceptual ones, Bak intervenes with an energetic gesture that immediately translates into a mark on the canvas, capable of capturing and crystallising what by its very nature is constantly changing and which the eye, alone, is unable to grasp: a sensation, a body, a feeling, nature and its atmospheric phenomena.
The themes that the artist has investigated and brought together in cycles of paintings and drawings are starting points, springboards from which reflections that concern universal conditions and find their iconographic and symbolic references in distant epochs, in archetypal images and in the symbologies and philosophies of remote civilisations, take their impetus. Through a work of synthesis and distillation, the essence of the images is restored, arriving at their absolute meaning, capable of drawing attention to timeless human conditions and feelings.
