"I firmly believe that my stylistic signature is immediately recognizable in the union of opposites—achieved through the reciprocal contamination of two elements: white Carrara marble and transparent resin—representing the visible and the invisible, the feminine and the masculine. Furthermore, my own 'script'—where a simple mark evolves into a drawing—further cements this alchemical marriage between the two parts.
All of this stems from a need to unite everything that has, until now, been divided; we are all part of a single Universe." (Things are connected by invisible threads; you cannot pluck a flower without disturbing a star — G. Galilei)
Otello Scatolini was born in Rome on March 21, 1964. At the age of 11, he began his apprenticeship in the marble workshop of his father, Livio.
He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, having studied sculpture under Emilio Greco and Venanzo Crocetti.
Since 2017, he has served as an instructor for the "Marble Sculpture" course at the "San Giacomo" School of Ornamental Arts, run by the Municipality of Rome.
He currently serves as Vice President of the *Università dei Marmorari di Roma* (University of Marble Workers of Rome)—an ancient guild founded in 1406, whose historical members included Michelangelo Buonarroti, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Giacomo della Porta.
In the field of theatrical set design, he has collaborated with Franco Zeffirelli, Gianni Quaranta, Luciano Damiani, Gaetano Castelli, Pierluigi Pizzi, P. Samaritani, and Giacomo Manzù.
He has also collaborated for many years with artists such as Enzo Cucchi, Francesco Clemente, Mario Schifano, and Cecco Bonanotte. For the Municipality of Rome, he designed and created two large-scale sculptures—"The Water Gate" (*La Porta dell’Acqua*, in Piazza Ambrosini) and "Mother Nature" (*Madre Natura*, on Via Nomentum)—as part of the "One Hundred Squares in Rome" (*Cento piazze a Roma*) project.
For the Great Jubilee of 2000, he created a bronze work, "The Urn of Saint Paul" (*L’Urna di San Paolo*), used for the sealing of the Holy Door at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, marking the conclusion of the Jubilee Year.
More recently, in the San Lorenzo district of Rome, he unveiled the "Gate of Beauty" (*Porta della Bellezza*)—the first street sculpture in Italy dedicated to Desirèe Mariottini and all women who have fallen victim to ignorance.
