Artist Profile

Ottavio Coppola is a ceramicist whose work lies at the intersection of art, craftsmanship, and formal research. His practice is deeply rooted in the ceramic tradition of the Sannio region, yet it stands out for a personal vision that reinterprets historical codes through a contemporary sensibility. His works explore the expressive potential of ceramic material, blending technical precision with poetic freedom.

In his creative process, manual work becomes a form of meditation and an act of identity. Clay, the wheel, glaze, and fire are not just tools, but companions in an ongoing dialogue between past and present. Coppola creates objects that are both concrete and symbolic, functional and contemplative, capable of evoking memory and generating beauty as a civic gesture.

His language is nourished by compositional balance, formal essentiality, and refined use of color. Each work reflects a tension toward harmony, where the material finds its own voice—suspended between imperfection and perfection, order and spontaneity. For Coppola, ceramics is never mere decoration: it is a form of writing that tells silent stories, rooted in time but open to interpretation.

Biography

Born in 1981 in San Lorenzello, in the province of Benevento, Ottavio Coppola grew up in a territory with a strong ceramic tradition, recognized nationally for its production since the 18th century. His first encounter with clay happened in early childhood, and from a young age, he developed a deep and instinctive connection with the material.

After intensive hands-on training, he continued his studies at the Art School of Cerreto Sannita, a center specialized in applied arts, where he refined his technical skills and developed a personal artistic vision. From the beginning, he chose to position his work in a liminal space—between function and form, memory and reinvention, art and craft.

In his studio in San Lorenzello, Coppola creates ceramic works ranging from unique pieces and installations to small series, always keeping the integrity of the artistic gesture at the core. His production is marked by formal minimalism and a refined use of color, combined with a deep respect for the slow and natural rhythms of creation.

His poetic vision can be summed up in a statement that has always guided his work:

“The only goal for an artist is to bombard you with beauty. Never defend yourself.”
