The American Academy in Rome is one of the foremost American overseas institutions dedicated to advanced study and research in the fine arts and humanities.
Founded in 1894 through the merger of the American School of Architecture and the American School of Classical Studies, its mission is to offer time, space, and resources to artists, writers, and scholars to pursue innovative projects within an interdisciplinary community.
Located on Rome’s Janiculum Hill, the Academy occupies a campus of historic buildings and gardens, combining the legacy of Rome’s landscape with a contemporary vision.
Every year, the Academy awards the prestigious Rome Prize, which grants about thirty artists and scholars residencies of 6 or 11 months, with financial support, housing, and workspace.
Additionally, the Academy hosts visiting artists and scholars from around the world, offering them access to its resources — library, photographic archive, study collections, and public spaces — and inviting them to engage in events, exhibitions, conferences, and interdisciplinary exchange.
The institution is funded by private donations, foundations, academic support, and grants.
In short, the American Academy in Rome represents a bridge between the international creative-academic community and the cultural richness of Rome — a place where tradition and innovation coexist.
