AEQUILIBRIUM

An evocative symphony that weaves the threads of elementary forces of nature with the complexities of human nature, in search of a harmonic synesthesia between the imaginary of the Indian artist Umika Mediratta Shriram and the western one of La Nica.

On September 21, 2024 at Galleria La Nica in Rome was inaugurated the exhibition "Aequilibrium", first solo in Italy of contemporary Indian artist Umika Mediratta Shriram. The event, which opened the new exhibition season of La Nica, has also obtained the patronage of the Embassy of India in Rome.

"Aequilibrium"
, the title chosen for the exhibition, a Latin term composed of the words 'aequus' («equal») and 'libra' («balance»), refers to the harmonic synesthesia that the exhibition aims to create between the artistic imaginary of the Indian artist and the western one of Galleria La Nica, and also wants to highlight the perhaps most important theme present in the artistic and poietic research of Umika Mediratta Shriram: the search for coexistence and, therefore, the balance between man, his interiority and nature.

Umika Mediratta Shriram
(Raipur, Chhattisgarh, 1990) is the first woman to have been able to study the Buddhist art of Thangka painting, a traditional form of religious art that for centuries was the exclusive prerogative of Buddhist monks who painted their stories on walls and scrolls in the prayer room during meditation. Mastering this art form has given the artist the opportunity to carry on the ancient tradition of Thangka by blending it with a contemporary spirit that touches today’s sensibility, thus making it known to a wider audience.

"Aequilibrium", solo exhibition of the Indian artist Umika Mediratta Shriram, curated by Maria Vittoria Marchetta, will be open from 21 September to 31 October 2024.
