Data and contact details

Thierry Bouffeteau was born in France in 1954.
He studied at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham (UK), graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In the United Kingdom, he worked as a set designer for the Bristol Opera Company (G. Verdi's Aida and G.C. Menotti's The Saint of Bleeker Street) and as assistant set designer to Peter Docherty for various ballet productions.
In 1983, he moved to Rome, Italy. He initially worked as an assistant set designer for cinema (among others: The Last Days of Pompeii by Peter Hunt, Rose Rosso Sangue and Didone e Enea by R. Marcucci, I Ragazzi di Via Panisperna by G. Amelio).
From the late 1980s onwards, he devoted himself to the design and execution of interior decorations in Italy and abroad.
Throughout these years, he continued his artistic research, producing paintings, sculptures and installations, which were exhibited in various exhibitions.
His artistic interest has focused heavily on India, a country he has often travelled to and which has inspired several series of works: Le Molecole della preghiera (The Molecules of Prayer), Dharmachakra, Tabernacoli (Tabernacles) and Gli Asana e i detriti del mondo (The Asanas and the Debris of the World) (exhibited at the Indian Embassy in Rome).

In 2016, he found a new favourite subject in Rome's Gazometro and the unique urban landscape surrounding it, creating a series of works centred on this theme, brought together in an exhibition entitled GAZO.

In 2017, he began working on a project on the theme of migration, creating a series of installations: Terre promesse/You shall not settle and Stampo per migranti.

In 2019, he participated in the MACRO ASILO – Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome (10-16 December 2019) with the creation of an in situ work: Derive.

Between 2020 and 2021, a new research project on colour led to three solo exhibitions: Papiers Bavards, Orizzonti and Silenzi Rossi.

In 2022, John Cabot University hosted an exhibition of 19 works entitled Strange Days at its Rome campus. In the same year, he also participated in the group exhibition Controvento – Artisti per Pasolini at Villa Guglielmi (Fiumicino).

In 2023/4, he devoted himself to exploring wax encaustic, which gave rise to the Fragile series.

In 2025, he created a series of works inspired by Mark Rothko entitled Parentesi, exhibited at the Lumina Art Gallery.
