The streets of Rome are full of inspiration. Combining its typographies, the joy of Romanaccio, the historical sites, and the starlings creating art in the sky, I create small portraits of a crazy, extraordinary city. They're also love letters.

I'm Michelle: Apulian mother, American father, lover of Rome since I was a child and now resident. My profession has always been writing and editing, then I learned to draw during the first lockdown of 2020—I couldn't write a word (or even read a word) so I tried to put pen to paper in a different way. I was immediately in love and tried drawing the streets, the sunsets, and the buildings I could see from the window.
The streets of Rome are full of inspiration for the eyes and ears: the beautiful typography of its shops and restaurants, the wonder of Romanaccio, the historical sites, the starlings that create patterns in the sky. With my project "Schizzibizzi," I make little works of art that combine all those things to create portraits of an imagined city — and to make people laugh while remembering how beautiful Rome is, even when it acts like a shithole.
It's also essential to me that everything I produce is the work of my hands. I work with ink on paper, and linocut made entirely by hand from engraving to printing - no press. For me every “imperfection” is a sign of love, humanity, and humor, three things that are integral to Rome and that we all need more of.
