Maria Lorek (b. Cracow, 1988) is a Polish painter and art conservator living and working between Naples and Cracow. Her artistic practice is rooted in a fascination with Italian Trecento and the Early Renaissance, reinterpreted through a contemporary visual language of allegory and symbolism.
She studied Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and earned her Master's degree at the Technical University of Munich. Her conservation training and hands-on experience with Old Master paintings, including work at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and conservation projects in Pompeii and Pergamon, have profoundly shaped her artistic language and understanding of historical painting. She works primarily in oil on panel using traditional techniques and gold leaf.
The human figure lies at the centre of her work. Allegorical compositions, female figures, botanical and animal motifs, and references to classical iconography explore memory, nature, the passage of time and the universality of the human experience.
Since 2018, she has worked as a full-time painter. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Poland, Italy and Luxembourg. Alongside her artistic practice, she promotes Polish culture in Italy by organizing poetry gatherings and cultural events at her studio in Pompeii.
