For more than 50 years, Temple University Rome has been a center for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning, where Rome is the classroom, the studio, the campus. Every semester and summer session, 150 to 200 undergraduate and graduate students come to Temple Rome from Temple University Main Campus and 40 different colleges and universities around the US. They leave Rome changed and enriched and better prepared for the global, interconnected world they will enter when they graduate.
Since the Fall of 1966, when the first group of 24 undergraduates and 12 graduate students arrived, Temple University Rome has provided over 12,000 alumni with an interdisciplinary, experiential and rigorous academic and cultural program that takes advantage of the splendid historical and contemporary resources Rome and Italy have to offer.
Gallery of Art
Established in 1990 as the exhibition space of Temple Rome, the Gallery of Art has the mission to identify, research and display the works of art of local and international, emerging and established artists who work in the area of Rome. Our exhibitions reflect our interest in an open-minded vision of the art process, without preference for style, medium or format, analogous to our teaching mission as an American university campus abroad. And as a teaching gallery, our focus is to share our ideas with students and the public through clear and innovative programming. Our research mission as a university gallery leads us to search for new solutions among very young artists or to present known artists in new ways. Over the years we have forged relationships with other institutions such as commercial galleries, the Roman art academies, and with collectors and the art loving community.
The Gallery of Art occupies approximately 200 sqmt of space on the ground floor of the Villa Caproni, the Headquarters since 1966 of Temple University Rome. Divided into two rooms, with high ceilings, white walls and modern lights, this exhibition space has hosted hundreds of shows, performances, concerts and other events since its inception.
Gallery openings are frequent and provide a lively environment for students to meet others students and members of the art and local community. Click here to see Temple Rome Art Gallery.
