Gagosian, Rome is pleased to announce Bangkok, an exhibition by Andreas Gursky.

One of the best-known contemporary artists, Andreas Gursky will exhibit important works created in 2011 in the gallery’s oval room, which have never before been shown in Italy. Bangkok marks ten years of Gagosian in Rome.

The central feature of the extraordinary, large-format works is the Chao Praya river that flows through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Siam.

Fascinated by the river’s flow and its brilliance within an urban environment, Gursky reveals its different characters: a dumping ground for all manner of debris; a crucible for ecological disorder; and a fascinating, reflective surface for the cosmopolitan Asian town.

Andreas Gursky was born in 1955 in Leipzig, former East Germany, and lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. His work is featured in institutional collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; National Galleries of Art, Edinburgh; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Kunsthaus Zürich; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Kunstmuseum Basel; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf.

The Hayward Gallery will open the major retrospective Andreas Gurksy on January 25, 2018.
